Whale flops onto yacht off South Africa coast
Strange News Sunday, August 22nd, 2010A couple sailing off the coast of Cape Town narrowly escaped death when a breaching whale landed squarely on their yacht.
The southern right whale, estimated to weigh up to twenty tons, left bits of skin and blubber behind on the destroyed boat before sliding back into Table Bay and swimming off.
“It was quite scary,” Paloma Werner, who spent the day sailing with her boyfriend and business partner, Ralph Mothes, told IOL.
“We thought the whale was going to go under the boat and come up on the other side. We thought it would see us.”
“There was hardly any wind, so we couldn’t get out of the way,” said Werner.
“We didn’t have time to take any evasive action.”
The yacht, a 10m training boat called Intrepid, suffered only superficial damage, with its hull left entirely intact.
“If it had been a fibreglass boat it would have been sunk, so we were lucky,” said Werner.
